Open Graph Checker

Open Graph Checker

Check how a link will look when shared on social networks

What the Open Graph Checker Does

When you paste a link into a social network or a messaging app, it often turns into a card with a title, a description and an image. That card is built from a set of tags in the page's code called Open Graph tags. The Open Graph Checker on WebTOOLkt reads those tags from any URL and shows you what they contain, so you can see what a share will look like before you post it.

It helps marketers, bloggers, developers and social media managers who want shared links to look professional rather than bare or broken.

How to Use the Open Graph Checker

  1. Enter the full address of the page you want to test.
  2. Run the check.
  3. Review the tags found: title, description, image, URL, type and site name.
  4. Look for missing or incorrect values.
  5. Fix the tags in your page or CMS, then check again.

If you recently changed the tags and the old version still appears on a social network, that network has probably cached the earlier version. See the section on refreshing below.

The Open Graph Tags Explained

The Open Graph protocol was created for rich sharing and is documented at ogp.me. The core tags are:

  • og:title. The headline of the card.
  • og:description. A short summary shown under the title.
  • og:image. The picture displayed on the card. This has the biggest effect on attention.
  • og:url. The canonical address of the page.
  • og:type. The kind of content, such as website or article.
  • og:site_name. The name of your website.

Many platforms read these tags, including Facebook, LinkedIn, messaging apps and some chat tools. X uses its own Twitter card tags first but falls back on Open Graph when they are absent.

Getting the Image Right

  • Use a large image. A size of about 1200 by 630 pixels, with a ratio near 1.91 to 1, is a widely recommended choice for link previews.
  • Use an absolute address. The image URL should include https:// and the full domain, not a relative path.
  • Keep important content centred. Platforms crop differently.
  • Avoid tiny text. Cards are often shown small, especially on phones.
  • Keep file sizes reasonable. Very heavy images may fail to load. The Image Compressor on WebTOOLkt can help.
  • Make it accessible. The image should be publicly reachable, not behind a login.

Common Problems and Fixes

  1. No tags found. Add Open Graph tags to the head of the page, or enable the feature in your SEO plugin.
  2. Wrong image shows. The platform may be using an old cached image, or the page has several image tags. Make sure the image you want comes first.
  3. Title or description is cut off. Shorten it. Display limits vary between platforms.
  4. Image will not load. Check that the file exists, uses https and is not blocked by robots rules or hotlink protection.
  5. Mismatched URL. Make sure og:url matches your canonical address.
  6. Preview differs from reality. Platforms refresh at their own pace.

Refreshing the Cache on Social Networks

Social networks store a copy of your tags after the first share. To refresh them after an edit, use the platform's own tools. Facebook provides the Sharing Debugger, and LinkedIn provides the Post Inspector. Both show what the platform sees and let you request a fresh scrape. Use this tool first to confirm your tags are right, then ask the platform to refresh.

Why Use This Tool Instead of Other Options

Platform debuggers often need a login and only show one network's view. The Open Graph Checker is free, needs no account and shows the raw tags directly. It works with the Open Graph Generator, Twitter Card Generator and Meta Tags Analyzer on WebTOOLkt, so you can create, test and fix sharing tags in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Open Graph tags help SEO?

Not directly, but better-looking shares can bring more clicks and visits.

Why does my old image still show?

The platform has cached it. Use its debugger to refresh.

Do I need Open Graph and Twitter tags?

Open Graph covers most platforms. Twitter tags give you more control on X.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
